Esports has appeared at the end of the 90s. In some countries, gaming competitions are recognized as sports disciplines. There are 13 games in which tournaments are held all over the world. League of Legends holds the leading positions among them attracting millions of people to watch and take part in it. What are the most prestigious tournaments of the world in LOL? Let’s find out together.
The World Cup
The League of Legends World Championship – an international competition between the best League of Legends concurrent players of professional leagues, conducted by Riot Games since 2011. The tournament is held annually, usually in the fall (September – October), after the end of the summer split.
Since the 2013 season, the winners of professional Leagues in Europe, North America, and South Korea received quotas for the group stage. In the 2017 season, the qualifying tournament was replaced by a preliminary stage of the main championship.
24 teams usually participate in the tournament. In 2018, the “Invictus Gaming” took the first place at the World Cup, overcoming the Fnatic. Today, this is the most prestigious competition in LOL worldwide.
Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), is the annual international tournament of the computer game League of Legends, held by Riot Games since 2015. From the 2016 season, the position of the regional championships in the baskets of the League of Legends World Championship draws is determined by the results of this tournament. In 2018, the winner of the tournament was the team Royal Never Give Up.
The Rift Rivals
The Rift Rivals is a series of cross-regional League of Legends minor tournaments organized by Riot Games. Regions participated in five concurrent tournaments, pitting a lot of teams from their closest rival regions against each other. Participants of each region are teams who were in best places in Spring Split/ Split 1/Opening Season of the year.
The teams are distributed by colors:
- Blue rift – Europe and North America;
- Red rift – China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Macao;
- Yellow rift – Brazil, Latin America South, Latin America North;
- Purple rift – Japan, Southeast Asia, Oceania;
- Green rift – CIS, Vietnam, Turkey.
Regional leagues are represented by separated tournaments, which give the chance to be qualified to the World Cup. For example:
The Continental League (LCL) is the main league of the CIS in which the most outstanding teams of the region compete. 8 teams take part in the League, each of them has to play with rivals during the season. Two splits are played during the year – spring and summer.
The winner of the grand finals of each LCL split passes to international tournaments in which teams from all LOL esports regions take part. The winner of the spring split goes to the preliminary stage of Mid-Season Invitational, and the winner of the summer split goes to the preliminary stage of the World Championship.
